Your third year will be spent on placement in industry.
This experience will put your learning into context and give you a head start in the careers market. You pay a reduced fee to the University for that year and you get paid a salary. At the end of Year 2 this course separates from the core degree.

You'll then study modules developed for our PhD students and complete two individual research projects the Year 4 project will be working in a research group to build up practical skills with research-level equipment. As well as lectures and tutorials, you'll learn through case studies, design projects, group industrial projects, lab work and manufacturing and plant visits. It's varied and hands-on. In the final degree year, both BEng and MEng students will have the opportunity to select project areas of interest from across the research of the department, and then spend the entire academic year working on the project with one of the research groups. Students on the MEng degree will complete a 5 month placement in industry and take part in 3 Industrial Training Programmes ITP which includes industry contact throughout Year's 3 and 4. Students completing a more research focused degree will complete a placement in one of our Research Centres. All students will have the option to apply for a Summer placement via the University Careers Service. Most of our labs take place in The Diamond, which means that we can get our hands on the newest and advanced tools. The session I like most this year is the sand casting of aluminium.
My hands were shaking when I was standing in a huge sand pit and pouring red hot molten aluminium in to a sand mould.
